This week, the PM took the liberty of expressing the grief felt by all Australians at the tragic death of a soldier in Afghanistan. Mr Bad Man, don't you ever speak for me.

John Howard would have been a soldier, like his war dead daddy and grandaddy, were it not for the deafness that carried him into politics. His deep respect for the diggers is fused into his ample eyebrows, framing his worldview. His adoration of the institution of the military, and the notion of men fighting for what's right, is far from concealed.

Last time someone was killed in the workplace,
(a concrete burial? a high scaffold, a falling leaf?)
the PM did not speak.

Unions consist of people banding together to fight for what's right, and protect their lives and futures. Brave Howard stamps in his lifts and denounces these women and men as homegrown terrorists, poised to destroy our way of life, when in fact it is unions that are responsible for much that is great about this country.

Two weeks left, John. Enjoy the view while you've still got it.
