Back in prison today, this time entering through a beeping tardis with whoosshing vents and a keen electronic beaglenose surveillance system. Lucky I washed last night's cocaine out of my hair.
Most prisons have some form of 'pre-release' program. Generally this involves the inmates who are close to their release date attending various programs about managing life once they are on the outside again.
The vast majority of prisoners will be, upon release, homeless. What a great start to their new life on the straight and narrow. Most will have bad names and debts with various entities, and all will be feeling desperate and disorientated. While homeless, their first task will be to wrestle with Centrelink and get some income support. After all, its almost impossible to get a job without an adddress. While they wait for their first appointment at Centrelink (up to a week), many will try to access family support services to assist them to get back in touch with family members. Others will go an score a cap of heroin to get their bearings, overdose and die quietly alone.
Meanwhile, one of the big prisons here in Victoria is preparing itself for the flood of terrorists who any day now will be caught and imprisoned. This means pumping up the security from 'maximum security' to 'maximum security infinity plus one', using funds diverted from education and rehabilitation programs within the prison. Great stuff.
